H7N9 Bird Flu Virus -
- As a result of the transparent dissemination of information by the
Chinese government, you may be aware from news sources that certain parts of
eastern China have been affected by the H7N9 bird flu virus. While
investigation is ongoing and significant progress has been achieved in determining
the cause of the outbreak, the Chinese government continues to work very
closely with the World Health Organization in stopping the spread of the virus.
The government's prompt and proactive implementation of health safety measures
have yielded positive results. In fact, the director of the influenza division
at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention described the dramatic
slowdown in the number of new cases in Shanghai as "very
encouraging."
The World Health Organization has not issued an advisory limiting travel to and from China. It is watching the situation closely and "does not recommend any travel restrictions." Equally, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) "does not recommend that people delay or cancel trips to China."
